Senior Science Officer

To work within the IIASA Directorate and with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis Internal Research Committee (IRC) and Research Programs.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To strengthen and facilitate collaboration among IIASA Research Programs;
  • To coordinate and help implement integrative research initiatives involving IIASA Research Programs and the Institute’s global collaborative network in its National Member Organization (NMO) countries;
  • To develop and maintain communication and collaboration networks with key institutions and individuals in NMO countries;
  • To contribute to developing institutional responses at IIASA to the research and policy interests and priorities of IIASA’s NMO countries and global stakeholders;
  • To advance the application of systems analysis and advanced systems methodologies to develop solutions to the problems of modern societies;
  • To assist the IRC in its tasks, such as quality assurance of the research plan, implementation of cross-cutting research, and inter-program communication;
  • To identify and help access funding sources for supporting institutional initiatives in research, training, and policy applications;
  • To participate in the organization and execution of IIASA’s International School of Excellence;
  • To provide support to the new IIASA-Alpbach Forum Partnership and the associated Global Think Tank.

Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in the natural sciences, social sciences, or formal sciences with demonstrated ability to publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals;
  • Clear affinity to systems analysis, global systems thinking, and the applications of systems research to global problems related to IIASA’s research agenda;
  • Ideally, demonstrated experience in planning and contributing to integrated, interdisciplinary research programs across the natural, social, and formal sciences;
  • Experience in the application of scientific analysis to the problems of modern societies;
  • Excellent communication skills in English; knowledge of other languages used in IIASA’s NMO countries is an asset;
  • Demonstrated interest in global system-science applications that lead to measurable policy impact.

Skills:

  • Ability to draft reports that analyze and summarize scientific information and policy applications;
  • Excellent organizational skills and the capacity to deliver on allocated tasks and respond in a timely manner to deadlines;
  • Good interpersonal skills and readiness to work within a team environment.
